TASTING NOTES
This unique wine is packed with black fruit, coffee, cocoa and subtle spicy notes. On the palate, it combines Rioja flesh with an almost Pauillac-like refinement and acidity, that ensures it remains lively despite its great weight and density. The finish is poised, aromatic and very long.
PRODUCER
Bodegas Valdemar is a family company whose roots date back to 1889. Despite this their approach is forward-looking; having pioneered many techniques in the region, from barrel fermentation and temperature control to saignée-method rosado, their style tends towards the modern.
VINEYARD
The Inspiración Valdemar range focuses on native and minority varieties of Rioja, and the Maturana is the result of painstaking work that begun years ago. Maturana disappeared due to phylloxera, but a few vines were discovered, clones were propagated and Bodegas Valdemar planted a few hectares. The berries are very small and very aromatic.
WINERY
The wine was fermented in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures, and underwent malolactic fermentation in new, lightly toasted French oak barrels. The wine spent twenty months in new French oak and a further seven months in bottle before release.
