TASTING NOTES
Bright and lively on the nose with intense cherry and cooked berry aromas. Opulent on the palate with flavours of cooked fruit elegantly mingled with a fantastic array of sweet spices. Good fresh finish with attractive length.
PRODUCER
This estate was bought in 1353 by the son of Dante “Divine Comedy” Alighieri, and is still owned by his descendants; Masi lend their winemaking expertise. Cool vineyards near Lake Garda give wonderful richness and clarity to the flavours.
VINEYRAD
Grapes are sourced from Serego Alighieri’s vineyards in Gargagnago di Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella. This wine comes from the Casal dei Ronchi vineyard, part of the original fourteenth-century acquisition. The red calcareous soil is deep and well drained. The harvest began early, on September 6th.
WINERY
After harvest, the best bunches were placed on bamboo racks in the lofts of the estate for three months’ drying. By the end, the grapes had lost 35-40% in weight and the Corvina had become affected by botrytis. They were partially destemmed and gently crushed, then fermented for thirty-eight days in large Slavonian oak vats at naturally low temperatures. The wine was mostly aged for twelve months in twenty-five hectolitre Slavonian barrels, with a percentage given three months in cherrywood.
