TASTE
A brilliant Grenache jam-packed with fruit flavours: raspberry, blackberry and plum, mixed with smoke, white pepper and herbal notes. Rich, full and yet never heavy on the palate, with a neat long finish.

PRODUCER
The first vineyard was established at Chapel Hill in 1973, although it was not until 1979 that the estate was named after the 1865 ironstone chapel that now serves as the winery’s tasting room. The name has long stood for elegant expressions of McLaren Vale fruit, but since the arrival of winemaker Michael Fragos a few years ago, the quality has risen a further notch or two. Fragos has twice been named “Winemaker of the Year”: by Winestate in 2003 and by the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2007.

VINEYARD
McLaren Vale is blessed with a cache of old, dry-grown bush Grenache vines. The main source of grapes is a vineyard planted in 1926, with a smaller proportion from parcels planted in 1952 and 1967. The grape berries from these bush vines are extremely small, with thick skins that are crammed full of concentrated colour and flavour. The growing season commenced early due to warmer than average winter temperatures. The weather during the growing season was extremely favourable, with ripening occurring gradually. Each vineyard parcel was hand-harvested.

WINERY
Parcels were fermented separately in open fermenters for ten days to facilitate a long, slow and gentle extraction. Free run and basket-pressed fractions were combined together. The wine was aged for sixteen months in two to five year old French oak hogsheads.

PRESS
“Light to medium red-purple; typical McLaren Vale grenache, with its bounteous red berry fruits complexed by savoury, spicy tannins on the long, medium-bodied palate.” – 92 points, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion, July 2013
