TASTING NOTES
A deep ruby colour, almost as black as the grapes it comes from such that first impressions are of blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry. On the palate, this wonderful basket of ripe fruit combines with a delicate oaky note for added complexity. The wine is round, full and fresh in the mouth, supported by a lovely tannic structure that makes for enchanting spicy notes in the finale.

PRODUCER
One of the best classified third growths in Médoc. It was in the eighteenth century that the Kirwan family, of Irish origin, became proprietors. After M. Kirwan’s death it became the property of the City of Bordeaux, and in 1925 it was acquired by the négociant firm Schröder and Schyler.

Kirwan’s wines are not manufactured; they result from an interpretation of factors that starts in the vineyard and is carefully executed as each winemaking step prepares for the next. Blending, which demands patience and great expertise is carried out by oeonologist Éric Boissenot, the general manager of the estate, Philippe Delfaut and Rodrigo Laytte, his technical director. The young wines are then aged in barrels, half of which are new, in the ageing cellar for twenty months, scarcely awoken by traditional fining with egg whites and racking by candle light.

VINEYARD
Les Charmes de Kirwan is the second wine of the property, launched in 1993. It is the main wine’s “little brother” and is generally made from the fruit of the youngest vines and parcels of the vineyard that are less gravelly, but sandier. The wine is made highlighting its fruit and maximising suppleness. It can therefore be enjoyed younger.
The property is situated in the commune of Cantenac overlooking the Garonne. The forty hectare vineyard averages twenty-seven years old, and is situated on the best exposed hills in the commune on sandy/ gravel soil. All grapes are hand-harvested with strict selection in the vineyard and at the cellar.

WINERY
This second wine includes parcels of younger vines as well as lots that didn’t quite make the grade for the grand vin. Fermentation was in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged in French oak barrel for nine months, with fifteen percent new wood.
