Producer
Many Rhône producers have enjoyed a renaissance in the last decade, and none more so than Delas. The company has history (back to 1836) and land (twelve prime hectares, including La Landonne and Les Bessards). Since 1997, in the form of Jacques Grange, it has also had a winemaker capable of realising all that potential. Under his influence a more modern ‘boutique’ approach has been taken, and the wines now combine clarity of flavour with hedonistic appeal – surely the ultimate goal for a Rhône producer.

Vineyard
One of the Rhône’s tiniest appellations, Cornas is a favoured collection of steep slopes just south of Saint-Joesph. The Chante Perdrix comes exclusively from south-facing vineyards, hand-picked plot by plot as they reach optimal ripeness.

Winery
Fermentation took place in new open-topped concrete tanks, following three days cold maceration. Temperature was limited to 28-32oC, and both punching down and pumping over were carried out over a ten day period; total maceration was twenty days. The wine was then transferred to 228-litre barrels (50% new) for malolactic fermentation and 14-16 months ageing.

Taste
Showing the more civilized side of Cornas, this offers open, ripe aromas of violets, black fruit, pepper and olives, with supple, concentrated fruit fleshing out the typically firm structure.

Press
“The 2010 Cornas Chante Perdrix is surprisingly tasty and evolved. I expected it to be totally shut down, but it reveals a dense purple color, supple tannins and a bouquet of blood sausage, Provencal herbs, pepper, smoke and hot rocks. It is a distinctive, classic Cornas that is surprisingly accessible for a wine from this appellation at such a young age. It should drink well for 15+ years. “ – 90+ points, The Wine Advocate, December 2012
