Producer
Many Rhône producers have enjoyed a renaissance in the last decade, and none more so than Delas. The company has history (back to 1836) and land (twelve prime hectares, including La Landonne and Les Bessards). Since 1997, in the form of Jacques Grange, it has also had a winemaker capable of realising all that potential. Under his influence a more modern ‘boutique’ approach has been taken, and the wines now combine clarity of flavour with hedonistic appeal – surely the ultimate goal for a Rhône producer.

Vineyard
Grapes come exclusively from the Domaine des Grand Chemins, a vineyard owned by Delas. All the vineyard plots lie on benches known as “le Chassis”, formed at the junction between the rivers Isère and Rhône. Grapes were hand-picked, plot by plot.

Winery
Traditional winemaking methods were used, starting with a cold soak followed by fermentation in open concrete tanks. There was daily cap- punching and pumping over, and the maceratiom phase lasted for between ten and twelve days. The wine was aged for fourteen months in a mixture of tanks and small one and two-year-old barrels.

Taste
black fruit on the nose, dark cherries, blackberries and blackcurrants that carry onto the palate with added woody and smoky notes. Some spice, especially black pepper, adds complexity to the palate. Well-balanced with a silky texture and a long finish.

Press
“The dense purple-colored 2010 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine des Grands Chemins offers abundant meaty, smoky, tapenade, creme de cassis and bay leaf notes as well as exceptional intensity and full-bodied power. It can be drunk early in life or cellared for 10-15 years.” – 91 points, The Wine Advocate, December 2012
