TASTING NOTES
A masterful combination of elegance and weight: a very full-bodied, ripe yet focused expression of Montepulciano.
PRODUCER
Sabatino di Properzio’s Montepulciano is as stylish as his labels. While this may sound like a contradiction in terms for a grape more often associated with rough-and-ready country wine, Sabatino has set out to prove otherwise, using low yields, old vines and increasingly organic viticulture to wring new depths from the DOC.
VINEYARD
The grapes for this single-vineyard wine are grown on a two-hectare site at 200 metres altitude in the county of Spoltore. The vineyards are south and south-west facing and the twenty-eight year old vines grow on medium density clay. Harvest is done by hand.
WINERY
Skin contact and fermentation lasted for approximately one month in open truncated Slavonian oak cones. Malolactic fermentation and ageing took place partly in barriques and partly in Slavonian oak vats over a period of eighteen months. Following a final settling period in tank, the wine was bottled without filtration.
