TASTING NOTES
A stunning mixture of concentration and freshness, tingling with orangey acidity and floral, grapey aromas, then direct, powerful and surprisingly sweet on the palate. A tour de force!
PRODUCER
In 1998, Familia Martínez Bujanda decided to look for somewhere to build a new bodega. They settled on the best, highest-altitude area of La Mancha DO, and acquired a 1,000 hectare estate, with 421 hectares under vine. Named after the old vines already growing there, Finca Antigua combines the latest technology and time-honoured winemaking traditions with stunning results.
VINEYARD
The Finca Antigua vineyard is located at 900 metres above sea level, providing cool nights to temper the hot summer days. Soil is loamy, with a high limestone content giving extra definition to the wines. The vineyard is sub-divided into thirty plots, each planted to the most suitable variety. Grapes were hand-picked in the fourth week of August.
WINERY
Following the harvest, the grapes were put out on mats to dry naturally in the sun, until the sugar levels exceeded 300 g/l. The bunches were manually turned twice each day, and guarded round the clock against wild boar. The grapes were then pressed, and fermented in stainless steel vats; fermentation stopped naturally, leaving residual sweetness in the wine.
