Producer
Many Rhône producers have enjoyed a renaissance in the last decade, and none more so than Delas. The company has history (back to 1836) and land (fourteen prime hectares, including La Landonne and Les Bessards). Since 1997, in the form of Jacques Grange, it has also had a winemaker capable of realising all that potential. Under his influence a more modern ‘boutique’ approach has been taken, and the wines now combine clarity of flavour with hedonistic appeal – surely the ultimate goal for a Rhône producer.

Vineyard
Grignan-Les-Adhémar is the northernmost appellation of the Southern Rhône, and until 2010 was called Coteaux du Tricastin. It covers twenty- two villages and 2600 hectares of stony, sandy soil sloping east from the Rhône itself. The Delas wine comes from two communes, Donzère and St-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, which occupy coolish sites close to the river.

Winery
All the grapes were destemmed before being transferred to closed tanks for a two-week alcoholic fermentation. The temperature was limited to 28-30°C and the wine pumped over daily. Malolactic and ageing took place in stainless steel, with bottling at 8-12 months.

Taste
Very attractive, open aromas, principally pepper, plum and raspberry, with a juicy, medium-bodied palate that combines vivacity with depth.
