Producer
Many Rhône producers have enjoyed a renaissance in the last decade, and none more so than Delas. The company has history (back to 1836) and land (twelve prime hectares, including La Landonne and Les Bessards). Since 1997, in the form of Jacques Grange, it has also had a winemaker capable of realising all that potential. Under his influence a more modern ‘boutique’ approach has been taken, and the wines now combine clarity of flavour with hedonistic appeal – surely the ultimate goal for a Rhône producer.

Vineyard
Delas owns ten hectares of Hermitage, and this wine comes from plots in the L’Ermite, Sabot and Bessards vineyards. The grapes were hand-picked, picking dates varying according to the ripeness of each individual plot.

Winery
Fermentation took place in open-topped concrete tanks, following two days’ cold maceration. Temperature was limited to 28-30oC, and both punching down and pumping over were carried out over a ten day period; total maceration was twenty-five days. The wine was then transferred to oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and eighteen months’ ageing, with fifty percent new oak.

Taste
Strapping young Hermitage, with dark, almost roasted fruits, emerging aromas of meat and olives, and great reserves of latent power matched by surprising levels of finesse.

Press
“One of the finest Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes I have ever tasted is the 2010, which comes close to rivaling their prodigious 2009. A wine of great intensity, it possesses an inky/purple color, plenty of creme de cassis, licorice, lead pencil shavings, camphor, flint and barbecue smoke characteristics, and a thickness and viscosity that eclipse that of the 2009. Full-bodied and powerful with sweet tannins, a striking floral/ mineral component in the mid-palate, and a huge, massive finish.” – 96 points, The Wine Advocate, December 2012
