Producer
Many Rhône producers have enjoyed a renaissance in the last decade, and none more so than Delas. The company has history (back to 1836) and land (twelve prime hectares, including La Landonne and Les Bessards). Since 1997, in the form of Jacques Grange, it has also had a winemaker capable of realising all that potential. Under his influence a more modern ‘boutique’ approach has been taken, and the wines now combine clarity of flavour with hedonistic appeal – surely the ultimate goal for a Rhône producer.

Vineyard
This wine comes from Delas’s oldest vines in the area of Hermitage called Les Bessards. This climat is in the heart of the appellation, and is famous for producing particularly deep, structured wines. The grapes were picked by hand.

Winery
After two days’ cold maceration, the wine fermented at 28-32oC, with daily punching down and pumping over for the first ten days, followed by a further ten days’ skin contact. Malolactic and sixteen months’ ageing took place in French oak barriques, with seventy percent new wood.

Taste
Still youthful, showing primary aromas of blackberry and smoke, shading to more developed olive and grilled meat notes. Very full-bodied and intense, with fabulous fluidity for its size. A classic expression of the hill of Hermitage.

Press
“A dark, smoldering style, exhibiting cocoa powder and braised fig notes up front, followed by additional espresso, mulled currant, melted licorice and graphite notes that push through on the muscular finish. Latent minerality keeps it all together.” – 97 points, The Wine Advocate, November 2014

“Brooding, restrained violet scent – it has the feeling of a volcano about to erupt; on the brink of explosiveness! Austerity in a glass, with very sticky tannins. Beautifully pure fruit. A masterclass in Syrah, but needs years.” – 18/20, jancisrobinson.com, September 2014
