TASTING NOTES
A superb Pinot Noir, whose concentration is clearly heralded by its dark ruby colour. Initially it seems somehat closed on the nose, but then opens up in the glass to reveal its authentic, noble Pinot Noir origins. The aroma reminiscent of sour cherry and raspberry is enhanced by a delicate hint of vanilla and spice. On the palate it shows excellent harmony with elegant acidity, well-integrated sweet tannins and enormous concentration of aromas.

PRODUCER
With fifty hectares of vineyards, Tenuta J. Hofstätter is one of the largest private wine estates in Alto Adige, and yet manages to live up to its reputation for absolutely pristine quality. It is meticulously run by fourth generation Martin Foradori Hofstätter, whose ancestor Joseph founded the estate in 1907. The pinnacle of the range is the single-vineyard Vigna S. Urbano Pinot Nero, planted in the 1950s by Martin’s father. His neighbours thought he was mad at the time; this is now one of the finest expressions of Pinot Noir not just in Alto Adige, but in the whole of Europe.

VINEYARD
The grapes are grown around the Barthenau estate at 450 metres above sea level. The vineyard is located on a gentle slope where both exposure to sunlight and air circulation are ideal, resulting in perfectly ripe and healthy grapes. The vines average fifty years old, planted on a mixture of clay, lime, eroded porphyry and fine gravel soil. The grapes were hand- harvested on the 25th of September.

WINERY
The bunches were seventy-five percent destemmed and lightly crushed, and given a day’s cold maceration together with the whole bunches. Fermentation then took place over fifteen days at 29oC. The wine was then aged for a year in barriques and a further eight months in large (thirty hectolitre) casks. It was bottled without fining.
