TASTING NOTES
The Kolbenhof Gewürztraminer is characterised by sumptuous fruit. Deep golden yellow in colour with green tints, on the nose it is reminiscent of ripe apricot and peach intermingled with exotic fruits such as lychee, mango and passion fruit. The fruit characteristics follow through on the palate – full-bodied, luscious but dry, the opulence cut by vibrant, firm acidity finishing elegant, dry and aromatic.
PRODUCER
Hofstätter With fifty hectares of vineyards, Tenuta J. Hofstätter is one of the largest private wine estates in Alto Adige, and yet manages to live up to its reputation for absolutely pristine quality. It is meticulously run by fourth generation Martin Foradori Hofstätter, whose ancestor Joseph founded the estate in 1907. The pinnacle of the range is the single-vineyard Vigna S. Urbano Pinot Nero, planted in the 1950s by Martin’s father. His neighbours thought he was mad at the time; this is now one of the finest expressions of Pinot Noir not just in Alto Adige, but in the whole of Europe.
VINEYARD
This Gewürztraminer is made from a selection of grapes grown in the Kolbenhof estate in the hamlet of Söll, overlooking Tramin. The exceptional microclimate and southeastern orientation of the vineyard makes this one of Alto Adige’s great sites for Gewürztraminer. The soil is gravelly clay-limestone, and the grapes were harvested by hand on the 7th of October.
WINERY
The grapes were given three hours’ maceration, then pressed and the juice settled, before fermenting for eleven days at 18oC. The wine was then matured on its lees for eight months, with weekly stirring.
