PRODUCER
Though run by the Boscaini family for six generations, it is really in the last fifty years that Masi has established itself as one of the Veneto’s most innovative wine producers. In the late 1950s, they identified certain historic vineyard plots which are vinified as Amarone and bottled separately to this day. In 1964, they launched the now-legendary Campofiorin, which revived the technique of a second fermentation with semi-dried grapes. Masi have also rescued the ancient Oseleta variety from extinction, and continue to use it in two of their celebrated “Supervenetian” wines.

VINEYARD
Both the Pinot Grigio and the native Verduzzo grape were cultivated at Castions di Strada in Friuli. The soil varies, but is mainly calcareous sediments on basalt and clayey subsoil. The Pinot Grigio grapes are harvested first, with the Verduzzo being picked around a month later.

WINERY
The two grape varieties were vinified separately. Pinot Grigio was vinified immediately after harvest to enhance freshness and bouquet; the malolactic was halted before completion. The Verduzzo was picked slightly over-ripe, then further ripened on racks for three weeks to concentrate the fruit. After a cold maceration (thirty-six hours at 5oC), it started fermentation in stainless steel tanks and was then transferred to barriques where it also completed the malolactic. Both varieties are aged for three months, Pinot Grigio in stainless steel tanks, Verduzzo in barriques. The wine was then assembled and aged for a further forty-five days in bottle.
