Producer
Though run by the Boscaini family for six generations, it is really in the last fifty years that Masi has established itself as one of the Veneto’s most innovative wine producers. In the late 1950s, they identified certain historic vineyard plots which are vinified as Amarone and bottled separately to this day. In 1964, they launched the now-legendary Campofiorin, which revived the technique of a second fermentation with semi-dried grapes. Masi have also rescued the ancient Oseleta variety from extinction, and continue to use it in two of their celebrated “Supervenetian” wines.

Vineyard
The grapes come from Masi vineyards in the hills of the historic Valpolicella Classico zone in the communes of Marano, Sant’Ambrogio and Sant’Ambrogio. The soil is mostly alluvial and stony. The grapes were harvested late, since Oseleta tends to improve with long hang- time.

Winery
The grapes were destemmed and fermented at controlled temperatures, with twenty-five days on skins. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was racked to new, high-toast Allier oak barrels for twenty-four months’ ageing.

Taste
This remarkable wine demonstrates the merits of the near-extinct Oseleta variety, with vivid yet precise aromas of forest fruit and spice, a full-bodied silky palate, and great complexity on the coffee/chocolate finish. It manages to be both a Venetian curiosity and a winemaking tour de force.

Food pairing
Big wine with structure and complexity suitable to go with red meat, game and strong cheeses.
