Producer
The Sebastiani family own one of the longest-established wineries in California. It was founded in 1904, and survived both Prohibition and the Great Depression to remain at the forefront of the Sonoma county winemaking. A century’s history seems not to have dented the company’s dynamism: it is one of the top hundred on-trade brands in the US and is growing sales substantially ahead of the market. The winemaker, Mark Lyon, has been with Sebastiani since 1979, so brings an intimate knowledge of the region and how to best express it in the bottle, with clarity of fruit, generosity of structure and sensitive use of oak.

Vineyard
The majority of grapes were sourced from the Lyon Vineyard in Alexander Valley, where there is a mixture of alluvial gravel, sandstone and iron-rich volcanic rock.

Winery
A three-day cold maceration was followed by a brisk, warm fermentation over fifteen days. The wine was pressed off part-way through, and finished fermenting in barrel – a mixture of new and one-year-old French and Hungarian oak. The blend was made in early spring, and the wine returned to barrel until the January 2011 bottling.

Taste
Really serious Merlot: aromas of black tea, black cherry and rose petal lead to a full-bodeid palate with berry fruit, espresso and cinnamon flavours. An imposing style demonstrating the complexity of the best Sonoma reds.
