PRODUCER
This estate was bought in 1353 by the son of Dante “Divine Comedy” Alighieri, and is still owned by his descendants; Masi lend their winemaking expertise. Cool vineyards near the Lake Garda give wonderful richness and clarity to the flavours.
VINEYARD
The Vaio Armaron vineyard at Gargagnago belongs to the counts Serego Alighieri. The terraced vineyard lies at an altitude of 230-265 metres above sea level, with a south-west exposure. The red terrain, rich in humus, is on eocenic limestone and clay, and has good drainage.
WINERY
After harvest, the best bunches were placed on bamboo racks in the lofts of the estate for four to five months’ drying. By the end, the grapes had lost 35-40% in weight and the Corvina had become affected by botrytis. After a delicate pressing, the dried grapes, which had been partially destemmed, were fermented for forty-eight days in large Slavonian oak barrels at natural low temperatures. The wine continued to ferment until the sugar was completely transformed into alcohol, and then it underwent the malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged for three years in Slavonian oak barrels, followed by four months in cherry wood casks and finally a minimum of five months in bottle prior to release.
