PRODUCER
Few South African winemakers have done more to champion elegance and terroir than Neil Ellis. His winemaking career spans four decades, and he bottled the first wines under the Neil Ellis label in 1986. Since 2006 he has been joined by his son Warren, who looks after both winemaking and viticulture. The philosophy has always been to seek out ideal vineyard sites for the different grape varieties on offer, and to tend those vineyards with the utmost care for the environment.

VINEYARD
The majority of the Jonkershoek Valley is a nature reserve well known for its fynbos, trails and waterfalls but it is the mouth of the valley that is known for its distinctive conditions best suited for grape growing. The forty hectares of vines on the Oude Nektar farm were planted during an ongoing replanting program that started in 1990 introducing the latest soil preparation techniques and best plant material. The south facing slopes are significantly cooler than the surrounding area of Stellenbosch and a howling south-easterly wind during the summer months cools down the vineyards considerably, minimising vine disease and holding down yields. The soils are mostly deep, red clay soils. Vineyard altitudes range from 190 to 550 metres above sea level.

WINERY
The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks, with pump-overs for extraction, followed by further maceration. It was transferred to new French barriques for malolactic, then matured for eighteen months in barrel, with a hundred percent new wood.

PRESS
“This shows muscle and purity, with a broad swath of tannins leading the way for now, offering a lovely core of steeped red currant, blackberry and black cherry fruit. Energetic iron and savory notes line the finish.” – 93 points, Wine Spectator, April 2014
